ADAKLU SEVA

Adaklu Seva Basic School in the Adaklu Anyigbe district is a remote community school that lacks lots of basic amenities. The school has been in operation for three years, and in 2019, it will be their fourth year, yet the school has only two thatched structures that serve as classrooms for teachers and students. One for kg 1 and 2, and the other for classes 1 and 2. At the time of our visit, the school had only two teachers and lacked essential learning materials, infrastructure, and teaching staff. Most of the kids walk barefooted to school and parade in worn-out uniforms.

Supplies like uniforms are catered for by their parents, and meager leverage comes from community contributions. Teachers complained of no teacher motivation, which has led to others abandoning the schools when they are transferred to teach.

The community in general has challenges accessing water, light, clinics, conducive learning environments, and safe sewage systems during our community engagement.

On May 23, 2018, we reached out to 68 students (comprising 20 from kindergarten 1, 20 from kindergarten 2, 13 from class 1, and fifteen from class 2), two teachers, community members with stationery, health supplies with snacks, and a little monetary incentive to serve as motivation for the two teachers, though the total population recorded by the school is 93 (49 girls, 44 boys, and three teachers).

Regardless of their condition, we encouraged parents, teachers, and the elders of the community to make use of the little they have to enhance the education of the children and ensure the kids are not physically and emotionally abused.

The aim of the donation was to promote quality, inclusive, and equitable education in Goal 4 of the Sustainable Development Goals to ensure no one is left behind and advocate for equitable access to education in underserved and rural communities.

We further partnered with the Wornam Foundation in the One Child, One Shoe project to provide footwear to the kids. Our call of action to duty bearers, civil society, and development partners through advocacy has had positive impacts. Today, the school has a 3-unit classroom block constructed by Pencils of Promise.
